That order did not last long. On lap three, Jabouille and Piquet swept past Arnoux, relegating the Renault driver to third. One lap later, Gilles Villeneuve produced an aggressive move on Bruno Giacomelli to claim fourth, while Piquet decisively overtook Jabouille to grab the race lead and immediately began building a gap. Imola’s unforgiving nature soon made itself felt. Brambilla, contesting the final Formula One race of his career, spun off on lap four. Two laps later, Villeneuve suffered a dramatic tyre failure approaching Tosa, destroying his Ferrari in a heavy accident that also eliminated Giacomelli after debris sent the Alfa Romeo spinning. The incident elevated Alan Jones into fourth place, with Jean-Pierre Jarier and John Watson following, although Watson later retired due to brake issues. As the race settled, Jones found strong pace and carved his way forward. He passed Arnoux for third and later overtook Jabouille to secure second position by lap 29. Arnoux’s race faded rapidly due to engine problems, while Jarier’s promising run ended with a brake failure spin. Jabouille’s day concluded with another mechanical retirement, reinforcing Renault’s reliability struggles in 1980. Out front, Piquet remained untouchable. The Brabham proved superior over race distance, allowing him to pull away steadily and secure a commanding victory at Imola, finishing 28 seconds clear of Jones. Reutemann recovered impressively to take third, followed by Elio de Angelis, Keke Rosberg, and Didier Pironi.
