♥ About Yammouneh Lake ♥ 💎 Yammouneh is the site of an ancient sacred lake and Roman temple. The turnoff for Yammouneh, near the town Chlifa, takes you twenty-seven kilometers over rugged empty foothills; a good introduction to the beautiful, but remote Yammouneh valley. 💎 The name Yammouneh might come from the Semitic word ‘Yam’ (sea in Akkadian) and so mean Little Sea. 💎 Yammouneh lake is situated 113 kilometres away from Beirut. Between the two mountains of Makmel and Mounaytra, Yammouneh is a peaceful remote location with ancient history and plenty of nature to discover. 💎 The small village of Yammouneh is near the south side of the lake. There is a Roman temple, along with Byzantine ruins. The statue of Aphrodite was removed from the site to the neighboring temple in the city of Baalbek . The temple is situated on a hill, approximately 300 metres from the main spring in the area,”the Naba al-Arbain”. 💎 The remote Yammouneh Nature Reserve is a wide fertile valley surrounded by mountains on all sides and a very popular destination in spring and summer. Its shallow fresh water pools attract a wide variety of flora and fauna. 💎 Yammouneh is an amazing painting created by God where all tourists visit to spend their most precious times. 💎 In Phoenician Mythology, the goddess Astarte “the Goddess of Love and Beauty” turned herself into a golden fish in Yammouneh lake to escape from the vengeance of Typhon. All that remains of the temple today is a retaining wall of limestone blocks which goes down to the lake level. Beneath are supposed to be subterranean chambers.
