In this video we have an early start as we ride south from Palmerston North to Wellington and then take a hands on look at the check-in and boarding process you can expect when crossing the Cook Strait by motorbike on the Interislander Ferry. This video was filmed in November 2025 on the day following the Thunder Run which was part of the awesome HOG Bikes & Backroads National Rally in Palmerston North. After the rally we were lucky enough to take a short tour around the top of the South Island with some amazing friends and riding companions which all started with a very early alarm and assembly before riding to the Interislander Ferry Terminal in Wellington. While we would normally just do the direct route using SH1, on this occasion we were diverted off the motorway at Paekakariki due to roadworks and ended up using the old road, SH59, which was very scenic and a nice change to the rather industrial blandness of the Transmission Gully route. Come back next week as we disembark the ferry in Picton and make a run to Takaka in Golden Bay.
