Fr. Stephen Fernandes explains the main teachings of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church called Lumen Gentium, one of the Four Constitutions of the Second Vatican Council. To understand Vatican II correctly one must begin with the first sentence of this document “Christ is the light of all nations”. A variety of biblical images are used to describe the Church’s visible and invisible nature. The Church as sacrament, sign and instrument of communion with God and of the entire human race is the thrust of this foundational document. For the first time in the history of the Church, the Council spoke of the universal call to holiness. Mary is presented in the mystery of Christ and is in a particular way united with the Church.
