Malcolm Goldstein’s “Wandering Still” (2017), performed by Stephanie Lavon Trotter (voice, woodblocks) and Sam Klapper (violin) at EXTRADITION PLAYS GOLDSTEIN concert 2 of 4, held at Leaven Community in Portland, Oregon, USA, on Saturday, November 9, 2024. Commissioned by baritone Thomas Buckner, this intimate piece has its source in a 1694 haiku by Matsuo Basho, which translates as: “On a journey ill / my dreams on withered fields / are wandering still.” The music begins with a violin improvisation structured on the haiku’s 5–7–5 syllabic structure, followed by the singer performing the haiku syllabically in the original Japanese. From there, “the music continues to unfold with sound events within the essential field of silence . . . the musicians independent of each other as well as with moments of interplay. It is a process of listening/dwelling in silence and sounding, focused within the sound itself, with no intention to dramatize the sound nor any intention to express the words of the haiku specifically.” The vocal role includes a percussion part “to be played occasionally as a kind of interlude demarcation between voice sound-events/activities.” Based in Portland, Oregon, Extradition is an ensemble and concert series that works at the intersection of composition and improvisation, deliberation and chance, clarity and silence.
