(21 Jan 2019) Five more victims of Friday's deadly explosion were buried on Monday as the small town of Tlahuelilpan tries to come to terms with their loss. The death toll in a massive fire at an illegally tapped pipeline in Mexico rose to 89 Monday as more of the injured have died at hospitals. The victims were gathering gasoline from an illegal pipeline tap in the central state of Hidalgo on Friday when the gas ignited, littering an alfalfa field with charred bodies. The fire occurred on a 14-inch (35.5 centimetres) underground steel pipeline that had been drilled, tapped and patched before. Tlahuelilpan resident Soltero Verduzco Rodriguez is still looking for a close relative who had been in the field on Friday and still hasn't been found. He said he still doesn't understand why they traded their lives for a few pesos. Approximately 57 of the charred bodies were so badly burned they could not be recognised. Relatives will have to wait for the DNA results to bury them.
