President Donald Trump’s call to reopen Alcatraz, the famed San Francisco-area prison closed more than 60 years ago, drew swift backlash from California Democrats and surprise from visiting tourists. Governor Gavin Newsom’s office dismissed the idea, which Trump introduced in a social media post Sunday, as a “distraction.” Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the plan is “not a serious one.” Scott Wiener, a state senator representing San Francisco, likened the idea to a “domestic gulag right in the middle of San Francisco Bay.” Perched atop a rocky island, Alcatraz closed in 1963 because it was too expensive to operate. It has since become a tourist attraction that draws more than one million visitors annually and generates tens of millions of dollars in revenue for the federal government, which still owns it. Trump said he was now directing the US Bureau of Prisons, as well as the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security, “to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders.” Trump also responded to reporters questions on China, trade and his recent move to put tariffs on films made overseas. President Trump said he would meet with Hollywood executives after confounding the US film industry over his plan to impose a 100% tariff on movies made overseas. “So we’re going to meet with the industry,” Trump said Monday afternoon. “I want to make sure they’re happy with it, because we’re all about jobs.” Film and entertainment figures on Monday struggled to interpret Trump’s directive, posted to his social media account on Sunday evening, which said the American movie industry is “DYING” and cast foreign films as a national security threat that spread propaganda to US audiences. “WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!” Trump said. Shares of Netflix Inc., Paramount Global, Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. and other media and entertainment companies slid as Wall Street and Hollywood tried to discern what aspect of filmmaking would qualify for such tariffs and why it should be targeted like other industries. Trump spoke to reporters in the Oval Office today after announcing that Washington DC will host the 2027 NFL Draft, flanked by DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris. -------- Watch Bloomberg Radio LIVE on YouTube Weekdays 7am-6pm ET WATCH HERE: http://bit.ly/3vTiACF Follow us on X: / bloombergradio Subscribe to our Podcasts: Bloomberg Daybreak: http://bit.ly/3DWYoAN Bloomberg Surveillance: http://bit.ly/3OPtReI Bloomberg Intelligence: http://bit.ly/3YrBfOi Balance of Power: http://bit.ly/3OO8eLC Bloomberg Businessweek: http://bit.ly/3IPl60i Listen on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with the Bloomberg Business app: Apple CarPlay: https://apple.co/486mghI Android Auto: https://bit.ly/49benZy Visit our YouTube channels: Bloomberg Podcasts: / bloombergpodcasts Bloomberg Television: / @markets Bloomberg Originals: / bloomberg Quicktake: / @bloombergquicktake
