Craig Beals from BealsScience.com shows how acetone breaks the bonds of styrofoam polystyrene. Styrofoam is made up of polystyrene that has gas injected while it forms. This causes small round balls of polystyrene to form making the characteristic look and feel of styrofoam. The polystyrene is a polymer made up of smaller units called monomers. The polymers are held together by weak nuclear forces called Van Der Waals forces. The acetone breaks these bonds as it degrades the polymer chains and the styrofoam loses its rigidity, the air escapes causing it to "shrink" into a plastic solution.
