There is no good place to find information on the Microsoft Japanese IME so I thought I'd try to contribute what I could to fill in some missing information. A couple things I didn't mention: NEWER You can just search "Japanese IME settings" to skip most of the menu digging! Make sure japanese is added as a "Preferred language" in the Language settings Turning on "Use previous version of Microsoft IME" under "Japanese IME settings/General/Compatibility" may reveal the advanced settings menu if it isn't there NEW I've found out some info about the difference between the Candidate List (spacebar) and the Prediction List (tab) just through my own experience using both. The Candidate List uses the literal string you have typed in to search for kanji/words, so it won't check for spelling errors. The Prediction List takes the string you typed and does some form of guessing, probably based on word frequency, as to what you may have meant. For example: when I type えいぎょ and hit spacebar, the Candidate List will convert it to 英魚 (it might be something different for you) which isn't a word. All it did was parse the two components えい and ぎょ and convert them to kanji that match those two components. If instead I hit tab, the Prediction List (probably) looks for common words that are similar to what I typed, and will convert it to 営業 (えいぎょう). It figured out the most likely word that I wanted was えいぎょう even though I left off the う. This is actually super useful! When I'm looking up words for which I only have the sound to go off of, using the Prediction List will give better results since my ear is still untrained. (Random thought: it's possible that the "predictive input" setting will influence what shows up in either or both lists. I'll do some testing and hopefully update this soon.) Hope that helps! 1) I found Shift+Space to actually be an annoying hotkey for reconverting since I often don't release Shift quick enough (eg: when typing a semicolon followed by a space), and it forces you into the kana input mode. So I changed it to Ctrl+Shift+Space and it's much better 2) If you figure out how to type half-width numbers from the non-numpad number keys let me know 3) You can only change the input mode when your cursor is focusing a text field. Personally, this is my biggest gripe. If you know how to change input mode without having to focus a text field PLEASE let me know, im dyin' here. Also, I haven't looked into why text seems blurry on my recording, probably something to do with bitrate idk. If you know what the deal is, I'd love to know! And I tried a new mic since my last video was so quiet, sorry if the volume difference was a problem. One day I'll look into video editing and fix it or re-record it.
