Inside the walls of Arizona State Prison in Florence, the mid-1970s were years of tension. Gangs were emerging, the drug trade was lucrative, and Hispanic inmates were often caught between survival and submission. Word traveled across prison yards about a powerful group in California: La Eme, the Mexican Mafia. Their reputation was legend—an organization so feared that their word could decide life or death. Inspired, a group of Arizona inmates began shaping something similar. By 1974, the Mexican Mafia of Arizona was born. But unlike California, this version would soon grow into its own beast. The gang’s early days were marked by familiar prison politics: protection rackets, contraband smuggling, and control of racial lines. But there was ambition, too. Leaders envisioned more than a clique—they wanted an empire that extended beyond barbed wire, reaching into Arizona’s neighborhoods. This origin story set the stage for decades of violence and influence. And though they borrowed the name, Arizona’s group was no carbon copy. Their rules, culture, and leadership would soon split them apart from their California cousins. The “New Mexican Mafia” was taking shape, and it would leave a permanent mark on Arizona’s underworld. Inside prison walls, respect is currency, and reputation can be more valuable than gold. In the late 1970s, Arizona’s Hispanic inmates were caught in the middle of a power struggle that would define the state’s prison politics for decades. At first, the group that called itself the Mexican Mafia inside Arizona prisons looked up to California’s La Eme. California’s version was older, more established, and already feared across the Southwest. Some Arizona members aligned themselves with La Eme’s codes and authority, believing the California-based group had to be respected if they wanted legitimacy. These men were traditionalists. They believed Arizona’s “Mexican Mafia” should remain an extension of La Eme. But others saw things differently Disclaimer: Our videos consist of scripts written and checked by real humans & edits and checks done by real humans. This video does not glorify violence.
