Jack Teagarden is known as the ‘father of the jazz trombone’. His collaboration with Louis Armstrong dates back to the 1920s, though segregation blocked them from appearing together in public at that time. Watching the two of them together onstage at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, one can’t miss the deep musical and personal connection they shared. It is a poignant reminder that jazz musicians have long played an important role in advancing the cause of racial equality. (Whether or not Jack invented the spit valve is a topic of discussion in the comments. For those who don't know what a spit valve is, be advised not to sit in front of a trombone player.)
