On the subject of Piazzolla and Larrea "It may be because composers of concert music during the second half of the twentieth century failed to devise any clearly original aesthetic forms that it fell to Astor Piazzolla to create his oeuvre as a model and symbol of the music of this period…. … Romulo Larrea plays the same instrument as Astor Piazzolla: the wonderful German bandoneon, whose keys are typically tuned to the tanguistas’ traditional specifications by German instrument builders. With its unmistakable voice so characteristic of tango orchestration, el fueye—the name commonly given to the bandoneon—retains in the hands of Larrea the poetic imprint of the inner city and technical pedigree that has been distilled and refined over eight generations of bandoneon masters. In his ensemble, Romulo Larrea has gathered together several young artists in whom he has instilled the artistic and human language of the tango with the affectionate authority of a true maestro. It is my hope that these faithful renditions provide eloquent evidence of the respect in which Romulo and his artists hold the genius of Astor Piazzolla, and that these few lines express my gratitude to both composer and artist.
