Full transcript of the video at https://bit.ly/2DzMD7b For deaf and hard of hearing Americans, the biggest source of sign language news comes from a small home studio near Detroit, with just one full-time staffer. Every weekday, Alex Abenchuchan uses American Sign Language (ASL) to deliver briefings of top news in the U.S. and beyond. He also regularly covers issues within the deaf and hard of hearing community. His video channel, The Daily Moth, has more than 200 thousand followers on Facebook. From closed captions on his videos to the color of his backdrop and his shirt, Alex’s news is designed to be fully accessible for every community. Quality sign language information is essential for deaf and hard of hearing people, who are often the last to know in emergency situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. In this video, we enter Alex's studio, to explore his craft and understand how he became a "guiding light" for the deaf community. Over the Christian Science Monitor’s 110-year history, we’ve built a legacy of high-quality, distinctive journalism because we recognize that news is more than facts. It’s the story of how we are each trying to make our homes, communities, and nations better. What matters are the values and ideals that drive us, not just the who, what, when, and where of the news.
