Tonight’s folder is labeled Nebulae — the messy, luminous evidence left behind when stars change state: dust-lit cocoons, ionized shells, and shock-heated debris fields. We’ll move slowly and stay grounded in the physics: what a nebula is (and what it isn’t), why some glow in narrow emission lines while others only reflect starlight, how stellar winds carve shells and rims, and how supernova blast waves turn gas into X-ray–bright plasma. Along the way we’ll follow three anchor “case exhibits” from NASA: — the Egg Nebula (CRL 2688) in its brief pre-planetary phase, — a decades-long time-baseline view of Kepler’s Supernova Remnant, — and the element-mapped interior story inside Cassiopeia A (Cas A). If you’re listening to drift off, you don’t need to hold onto every detail. Let the words be a soft inventory: light, gas, dust, temperature, time.
