We set out on train from Tokyo to Unazuki Onsen. Our journey began the day before, buying tickets at Tokyo Station for The Shinkansen in Gran Class On The Hokuriku Line. Gran Class tickets on this line to Kurobe-Unazukionsen Station cost ¥21,240 each. A reasonably large premium over standard tickets. The Shinkansen part of the journey took a 2 hr 17 Min for a distance of 336 km at speeds of up to 260 kph. We got to Tokyo station early for our 11:24 scheduled departure. Gran Class allows you access to the View Gold Lounge at Tokyo Station. The lounge is a bit hard to find as Tokyo Station is huge - it's located on the concourse of the Yaesu Central Exit. You can have a refreshing team or coffee and a snack - alcohol was not served. It's probably the quietest part of Tokyo Station! There is a food trolley that comes around where you can buy food and drinks, but unlike other Gran Class routes, food and drinks are not complementary. We bought our on food along. I ate Onigiri and Jo had a Melonpan ~ Japanese sweet bun. The seats were and cabin area was roomy and super comfortable with heaps of leg room and fully adjustable to get the perfect position. The toilets clean and bright, cabin noise levels low and the ride sublime, considering the speed we were travelling. Our only complaint was the trip was too short - we really enjoyed the experience. We got off at Kurobe-Unazukionsen Station just in time to see an express Shinkansen rush by. We only had a few minutes to proceed to the regional station a couple of hundred meters away and buy tickets on the regional train. The trip out to Unazuki Onsen was only 13 km but it took 30m to complete as it was quite slow moving, stopped at all stations and as the line was mostly single, had to stop for trains coming in the opposite direction. The trains here depart hourly. It cost only ¥640 one way per person. The ride was a stark contrast to the Shinkansen Gran Class. No air-conditioning, slow and noisy, but charming and quaint. We got off at Unazuki Onsen and walked a short way to our hotel for the next two nights. Look out for videos in the coming weeks exploring t Kurobe Gorge and the Railway as well as a review of our hotel and another exploring the town and surrounds of Unazuki Onsen.
