Woodturning - Sycamore Burl

welcome to this weeks woodturning video. In this woodturning project video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a huge sycamore burl into an open topped vessel. when woodturning a piece like this I like to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. This piece of sycamore had a line of burl running across the outer portion of the tree and lots of rippled figure in the surrounding wood. I would have liked to refine the profile of the vessel further but in doing so would have lost all sign of the burl structure. it can be a challenge to mount the piece in the perfect alinement so that you don't remove the wood you want to capture while finding the form to match the over all piece. luckily this tree yielded many blanks with even better burl formation so there will be plenty more opportunities to get it right.
