The Dolomites are a fairy tale wonderland. During the summer months, we've hiked and climbed some of its amazing trails. This year, we decided to explore the Dolomites in winter to experience its snowy beauty. What we saw and experienced was nothing short of extraordinary. Val di Fassa with its nearby Catinaccio mountain group and the Vajolet towers is a breathtaking alpine paradise that captivates every visitor. One of the most enchanting winter hike in this region is the trail to Rifugio Gardeccia and Vajolet. We started our snowy adventure from Pera di Fassa, utilizing the Vajolet 1 and Vajolet 2 chairlifts to reach the trailhead. The Catinaccio, or "Rosengarten" in German, is one of nine mountain groups recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its remarkable landscape and geological significance. The scenic trail from Rifugio Gardeccia to Rifugio Vajolet spans around 2 km, providing near-constant views of the Catinaccio wall and Vajolet Towers. With the pristine white snow surrounding us, the landscape truly felt like a fairy tale wonderland. After about an hour of hiking, a spectacular sight emerged: a tiny hut perched atop a rocky outcrop—Rifugio Paul Preuss—while Rifugio Vajolet lay just behind it.
