Today, I took a ride on the vintage double-decker train, number Y762, from Lijiang to Dali — the only regular train in China equipped with double beds. Double-decker trains are quite rare in China, and the "Single Soft Cabin" seat I experienced today is even more unique. There are no similar seats on any other trains. The main feature is that each private cabin comes with a double bed and a single bed. With just one ticket, you can bring two additional people along, making it a great choice for couples or families. This train travels from Lijiang to Dali. If you’ve never heard of these two cities, they are located in the southwestern part of China’s Yunnan Province and are famous tourist destinations with beautiful scenery year-round. Yunnan is also one of China’s most ethnically diverse regions, which is reflected in the many ethnic-inspired decorations and cultural elements on the train, adding a rich local flair. Along the way, the train passes by Erhai Lake, one of Dali’s most famous attractions, known for its romantic atmosphere. The same train also operates between Lijiang and Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province. However, those trains run at night, meaning you’ll miss the scenic views along the way. Weather can also greatly affect your experience, so if you plan to take this special train, make sure to check the weather forecast and try to choose a clear day. Additionally, each train only has 14 cabins, and tickets tend to sell out quickly during peak seasons, like summer holidays. It’s recommended to book in advance. Although the 4-hour journey costs 328.5 RMB (45 USD), which is definitely not cheap for a non-high-speed train in China, keep in mind that the ticket allows you to bring two additional people, essentially making it a ticket for three. By comparison, a regular seat ticket on the same train costs only 23.5 RMB (3.2 USD), a significant difference. However, if you want to experience a private cabin with a double bed in China, your only options besides this train are those luxury tourist trains priced over 7000 USD. So, from this perspective, I have no complaints about the ticket price, but it would have been better if they had cleaned the windows a bit more.
