Released on 23 January, marking the birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose, this presentation of “Oi Mahamanob Ase” by Shrutinandan Choir offers a reflective tribute to the ideals of courage, human dignity, and moral awakening that shaped India’s freedom movement. “Oi Mahamanob Ase” is a Rabindra Sangeet composed by Rabindranath Tagore in April 1941 at Santiniketan, during the final phase of his life. The song does not refer to any single historical figure. Instead, the Mahamanob represents a universal human spirit — the ethical and moral awakening of humanity in times of crisis. Historically, the phrase Oi Mahāmanob Ase later became associated with writings and publications connected to India’s freedom movement. In 1931, the nationalist Bengali journal Jayasree was founded by Leela Roy, closely linked to freedom-movement circles that included Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Rabindranath Tagore contributed a message of encouragement to Jayasree, offering moral support to its cultural and humanist ideals. In later years, collections and writings related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose adopted “Oi Mahamanob Ase” as a symbolic title — not as a historical claim, but as a tribute drawn from Tagore’s vision of human courage, ethical resolve, and awakening. In this choral rendition, Shrutinandan Choir presents the song with restraint and collective voice, emphasizing unity over individuality and reflection over spectacle. The performance is preceded by a brief contextual foreword to help audiences in India and abroad understand the historical and philosophical background of the work. 🎶 This is not merely a song of remembrance. It is a call — to conscience, courage, and humanity.
