Jill Helms is a professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Stanford School of Medicine. She leads a team of investigators, funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, who are working on accelerating tissue healing in humans by activating a patient's own stem cells at the site of an injury. The team's strategy is to "commandeer" the molecular machinery that regulates stem cell self-renewal and proliferation and, in doing so, stimulate tissue regeneration even in people whose own repair mechanisms aren't working well. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
