Sabino Canyon Recreation Area is located at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains, on the northeast side of Tucson Arizona. Sabino Canyon is part of the Coronado National Forest and has over 30 miles of hiking trails in the area and some that lead deeper into the Santa Catalina mountains. Due to the natural concentration of water, Sabino Canyon is greener and has more plants and animals than much of the surrounding area. We enjoyed a day hike that started on the Bear Canyon Trail and then we followed the Sabino Lake Trail to Sabino Creek Dam and Sabino Lake. We continued to follow the Sabino Creek Trail, eventually crossing Sabino Creek back to the Upper Sabino Canyon Road. We then followed the Sabino Canyon Road back to the visitor center. Sabino Canyon also offers a tram tour in the Sabino Canyon Crawler or the Bear Canyon Shuttle, which offers a round trip narrated tour of the canyon. There are nine stops along the way where passengers can get out to hike and explore the canyon.
