This year's fight for the Cooch Behar MP seat is primarily between BJP's Nishith Pramanik, who's also a minister in the Union Cabinet, and TMC's Jagadish Basunia. To prevent violence & conduct polling fairly, the Election Commission had deployed 4,500 state police personnel in Cooch Behar district, which is almost double compared to the security officials that had been deployed in the neighbouring Jalpaiguri & Alipurduar districts. However, this deployment has been of no use as Cooch Behar infamously known for its long history of post-poll violence, has once again experienced tremendous violence & political clashes following the conclusion of voting in the 1st phase of LokSabha election in West Bengal.
