nAayiram is an ancient South Indian confederation of a thousand guilds of various trades. The children of these merchants played with unique ivory dice. These dice were studded with precious gems bearing the guild’s logo ‘௱௰௲,’ representing the numbers 1, 10, and 100 in Tamil numerals. The number also symbolized the guild’s membership size at its peak. This game takes its name from this legacy: the English mathematical variable ‘n’ paired with the Tamil word 'Aayiram,' meaning numerous thousands. GOAL: Score the most points by forming valid numbers. SETUP: Place the rule sheet in the center so everyone can reference the Tamil Numerals Table. Give each player a paper and a pen or pencil to keep scores. Sample score sheet provided with rules. Players can keep scores individually or take turns to be the scorekeeper for ease of playing. Keep a calculator handy if needed. HOW TO PLAY: The player wise in math or the elder most player starts first. Each player gets 3 turns to roll the dice. Roll all dice together first. Then decide which dice you want to keep and which ones you want to re-roll. You can also re-roll previously kept dice within your 3 turns. After your turn ends, note down the number you have finalized and score that many points. The player with the most points at the end wins. In case of a tie, play a tiebreaker between the players. GAME VARIATIONS: 1. Tournament: You can play the above version as a tournament of 10 to 20 rounds or with a target score. 2. Adventurer: Instead of 3 turns per player, you can re-roll as many times as possible. But you cannot re-roll the dice you set aside. And the remaining dice you can re-roll all at once or as you wish. You can decide if you want to stop and pass the dice or keep playing. If you cannot add the newly rolled dice to the ones set aside, then your round ends with 0 points. 3. Accountant: Again, there is no 3-turn restriction. But you need to roll each dice one by one to form numbers. You can decide to stop or continue playing. If you cannot add a dice rolled to the ones set aside, then you score 0 points for the round, and your round ends 4. Junior: The biggest number possible in this game is nine billion, nine million, nine thousand. That is 9,009,009,000, or ௯௲௯௲௯௲. If you are playing with kids, you can cap the max number at nine thousand nine hundred ninety, or 9,990. Email me on sangampoems at gmail.com to buy the game.
