In this short math video, we will review converting scientific notation to standard form. We will answer a standardized math test question where we are given a numerical value written in scientific notation and asked to identify which decimal value is the equivalent value written in standard form. We will understand that standard notation is the "normal" way to write a numerical value. We will review that a number is written in scientific notation if there is one significant figure to the left of the decimal point and multiplied by a power of ten. We will learn that the negative exponent indicates that this is a decimal value smaller than one. To convert to standard form, we will move the decimal point to the left (since the exponent is negative) the same number of digits as the exponent. We will fill in the empty digit places with zeros.
