Respiratory Infections in Children with Medical Complexity PRESENTER Christopher Russell, MD, MS Associate Professor, Pediatric Hospital Medicine Stanford School of Medicine SESSION DESCRIPTION Acute respiratory infections, such as pneumonia, are one of the most common reasons for hospitalization for children with medical complexity. One important group of children with medical complexity with frequent respiratory infections are children with tracheostomy. Additionally, children from racial and ethnic groups historically marginalized (e.g., Hispanic/Latino and Black children) and with public insurance are at increased odds for poorer respiratory-related health outcomes. This session will review the epidemiology and outcomes for acute respiratory infections in children with tracheostomy and review racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic health disparities experienced by children with medical complexity.
