Lecture content: What Are Orthopaedic Implants? Common applications; Design Considerations of Implants; Functionality and load-bearing requirements; Anatomical fit and motion considerations; Materials Used for Orthopaedic Implants: Metals, ceramics, polymers; Key material properties (strength, wear, biocompatibility); Testing and Evaluation of Implants; Mechanical testing (tensile, fatigue, wear); Use of simulators for preclinical evaluation; Real-life applications of different implant types; Mechanisms of Implant Failure; Case Studies/Examples. Biography: Shahrzad Shariatpanahi is a biomedical engineering PhD researcher at the University of Edinburgh specialising in joint replacement technologies. Her research focuses on improving the design and material selection of trauma implants to enhance their safety, performance, and longevity for patients. She has extensive experience working as an engineer in the medical device industry, as well as studying and analysing failed implants retrieved from patients, to better understand the causes of pain and implant failure. Shahrzad is also a STEM ambassador, hoping to inspiring the next generation by raising awareness of orthopaedics, biomedical engineering, clinical technology and the broader world of STEM. All biomedical engineering and Clinical technology students at the University of Bradford are welcome to attend and this lecture will form part of the learning materials for the biomaterials lectures in semester 1 for 3rd year students and will provide further insights towards their assignments for the biomaterials part in semester 1. Dr M. Youseffi (Lecturer and module leader for biomaterials with implant design and technology)-University of Bradford.
