In the waters off the coast of French Guiana, a French territory in Latin America, fish are plentiful. This is thanks to European rules that protect the area from overfishing. But boats from the nearby Republic of Guyana, Suriname and Brazil have been crossing into these waters for years to fish for choice species. Our Observer, a fisherman from French Guiana, says the problem has become worse than ever. And it could have dire consequences for the environment, fish populations and local fishermen. CORRECTION 14/02/2023: In this video, we incorrectly stated that Guyanese fishing associations "said most of the boats came from Suriname" and that "the Surinamese denied that, saying that French Guiana was too long a trip for their boats to make." In fact, it was Surinamese fishing associations who claimed that most of the boats came from the Republic of Guyana, who in turn, denied this, saying it was too far a trip for their boats to make. #FrenchGuiana #Fishing #Environment 🔔 Subscribe to the Observers channel on YouTube: http://f24.my/2lke The Observers program brings you the best amateur images from around the world, all verified by France 24 journalists.
