A decision on a possible R26 million settlement in the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the widow of Lindani Myeni against the city of Honolulu in Hawaii is expected to be taken next month. This comes after a full council hearing held on October 9 failed to take a final vote on a proposed settlement of $1.5 million negotiated between the attorneys for both the city and the plaintiff Lindsay Myeni. Myeni's civil lawsuit alleges that police officers acted recklessly and without justification on the night they killed her South African-born and raised 29-year-old husband on April 14, 2021. The October hearing saw senior officials including the Mayor, the Honolulu Prosecutor and the Police Chief argue that the council should not settle the case and rather allow the civil trial to go ahead where a jury would decide on any financial penalty.
