WILD Island Hopping Adventure in Sabah, Malaysia! 🇲🇾

In today's Malaysian Borneo adventure, we are taking a boat from Kota Kinabalu Sabah to one of the many beautiful Sabah islands on the coast of the city. The islands are known for their amazing white sand beaches but we are taking our Malaysian island hopping adventure to a different level... a full-on jungle trek on a Malaysian Borneo Island!! How to go to islands in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia: The day started early. We got up, and dropped off our bags at a very convenient bag drop place in the mall next to our hotel (Ming Garden). After that, we headed over to the Kota Kinabalu passenger terminal. When you get to the terminal, you'll need to walk into the first building you see on the right-hand side of the path. There should be a bunch of desks, all selling essentially the same packages. For us, we bought the one island round trip for 35 RM Manukan Island. The price increases with every island you add and you can add extras like life jackets and snorkeling gear for an additional price. The boats leave every 30 minutes from 8am-11am and your only chances to return to Kota Kinabalu I believe is every hour between 1PM and 4 PM. If you miss the return boat, it looks like you will be sleeping on the island but there are plenty of guesthouses and hotels there if want to stay in one of those. We arrived at the port at 9:50am. By the time we picked our trip and paid our fees, we missed the 10AM boat and had to wait until 10:30. You'll be ushered over into a sitting area and will wait under a small tent for your boat. The boat ride is fast and a bit bumpy, so if you are easily seasick this may not be the ride for you. On a hot day, the wind and water splashes do feel super nice. The boat ride is beautiful. Once we rolled up to the dock they took our names so they know who they have to bring back and we were free to go anywhere on the island. We were expecting to pay an island fee of 25 RM once we got there but we did not have to (this may not be the case for your trip so beware). A Malaysian Island Jungle Trek: We made it! After a 20-minute boat ride and 30 minutes of waiting we were on the island and ready to explore. The only problem was... we didn't really know what to do. We started walking down the path along the beach. It's a very beautiful island. Palm trees line the beach, nice beach restaurants on the other side of the path, and plenty of fish swimming off the coast if you want to go snorkeling. Most people purchased excursions for their island trip (banana boat, paragliding, sea walking, etc) but we did not. The budget bois rarely pay for things like that. So we circled the beach path and found a mysterious little sign next to the jungle that said just enough to pique our interest "Jungle Trek". Now being the nature enthusiast and hikers we are, this was not something we could pass up, and although it took us a second to figure out where the heck we were going, we eventually found ourselves completely alone in the middle of a fracking jungle on a tiny island off the coast of Sabah. IT WAS AWESOME! The path was not very well maintained, which really gave this "Jungle Trek" a very wild vibe. We didn't expect to find anything where we are completely alone in nature, on a tiny island where people are being dropped off every 30 minutes. The trek was exciting, it was fun, and we even got to see a few HUGE lizards while exploring around. The trek led us to the very tip of the island called "Sunset Point". Overall we spent about 2 hours on the island and unless you have excursions planned, I think that's the perfect amount there. Our Last Day in Sabah Malaysia: It was time to head back to Kota Kinabalu to catch our flight. We were lucky enough to catch the boat at 1PM (our return was scheduled at 2) so we were able to get back to our bags before being charged more. We spent our last few hours at Nando's in the IMAGO Mall. We do love our Nando's and it was a perfect way to relax and get our first food after a long, hot, and tiring day.
