Gateway Classic Cars is proud to offer this striking 1973 Mercury Cougar XR-7 at our Philadelphia showroom in West Deptford, NJ! 1973 saw the beginning of what many remember as the Oil Crisis due to OPEC’s decision to halt oil exports to the US. Pump prices surged and so did consumer trepidation. A plethora of cars lined the streets to the pumps to fill their tanks up and the wallets of American oil companies. Mercury was in the midst of all of this, with the legendary Cougar in its sixth year and despite sharing many of components, including newly standard front disc brakes, was considered more refined than its cousin, the Ford Mustang. Just take a look at the car and you’ll be sure to agree. The interior of this XR-7 conveys a “Euro-elegance” with its white vinyl interior and sharp woodgrain backing for the instrument panel. The bucket seats are flawless and embroidered with the fierce Cougar, a beast that boasts authority and grandeur. Driver amenities including Air Conditioning and original AM/FM radio are fully functioning as well as the analog clock! A chrome T-handle shifter couple to a C-6 Automatic Transmission. Look up and take note of the functioning sunroof, an option unique to 840 Mercury Cougars in 1973 and installed by the American Sunroof Corporation. The exterior has just as much class as the inside thanks to a beautiful coat of Blue Glamour Metallic paint, a white vinyl top and beautiful chrome bumpers. Open the hood and gaze upon one of the most stock engine bays you will see featuring a vehicle emission control sticker on the driver side valve cover! Speaking of valve covers, the engine powering this big cat is a 168 horsepower, 351 CID V8, standard on all Mercury Cougars in 1973. This car drives as well as it looks and has just under 75,000 original miles! To top it all off, this vehicle includes a framed Marti Deluxe Report, owner’s manual, owner card and retail delivery card. How cool is that?! Additional features include Power Brakes, Power Steering and stock XR-7 hub caps. You have to see it to believe it! Make this gorgeous Mercury yours today!
