(29 Sep 2015) Gharib Hassou, the representative of the PYD, the People Protection Unit's (YPG) political wing, in the Northern Kurdish region of Iraq, says Russia should do more to help the ethnic groups in Syria. Hassou was responding to Russian President Vladimir Putin's speech at the United Nations on Monday. Putin said that no one but Assad's armed forces and the Kurdish militias were truly fighting ISIS and other terrorists in Syria. But Hassou said the Russians should be more helpful to the Kurds. "It's obvious that since the start of the revolution in Syria, the Russian always stood next to the regime. Since it's biased to the Syrian regime, it means they deny all other ethnic minority groups, just as the regime does. Because the Russians didn't mention any kind of help or support to these ethnic groups, especially the Kurds," said Hassou. The PYD official said the Kurdish militia in northern Syria had proven to be very effective in the fight against Islamic State militants and that they would continue to do so.
