Looking at EPD values for a bull can seem like information overload. With so many numbers, where do you even start? An Economic Selection Index can help simplify the selection process. By combining several EPDs into a single number, an Index is a great way to preliminarily sort animals based on their overall merit. Plus, an Index takes into account the real-world economic importance of each trait included in the Index. That means you can focus on the trait that is most important to your beef operation: profitability. Harly Durbin, Ph.D. Candidate in Animal Genomics at the University of Missouri, discusses the power of Economic Selection Indexes and how to use them in your operation. Video by Dr. Jordan Thomas, Beef Reproduction Extension Specialist from the University of Missouri's Division of Animal Sciences in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. This work is an effort of the National Center for Applied Reproduction and Genomics (NCARG) at the University of Missouri, supported by Critical Agricultural Research and Extension 2017-08692 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
