This area is covered with hilly mountains. There are steep cliffs with many caves in the river valley. For millennia this was the hunting ground of the Neanderthals, and in these caves they found refuge. There is no flint at all in these places, but there are plenty of slate rocks of varying hardness. Most of the tools they left behind were made of lydite slate, a fairly hard stone. I always wondered how they got along without flint? Lydite slate is very different from flint and has its own specific processing. To find out, I went to the region. From my previous travels I already knew where the rock came to the surface. In an hour and a half I made three large hand chippers, a couple of typical Neanderthal "knives", and a couple of scrapers. With their help, I was able to make a simple spear and throwing stick in two hours.
