"RIVER SHINE" byjojobrooksshifflett Few realize the beauty that is hidden by the crowd of trees and bushes that live and thrive along the banks of the Lumber River. The river runs but never rushes as she flows through the sandy coastlands of Robeson County in southeastern North Carolina. Most people these days rush down busy roads in trucks and cars and only get a glimpse of the tea colored dark waters when crossing a bridge and believe me, the river does not look near her best from a brief view or quick glance one sees from a car driving across a concrete bridge. If you want to see something really special you must take a walk and take your time and just walk quietly and enjoy the view of the ole' Lumbee. Find a path of white sandy soil and walk in the shade of the canopy of trees that grow on the banks of the river where Cypress trees live and grow for hundreds and even thousands of years in the shallow dark waters of the Lumbee River. And my one small offer of advice to first time river walkers is to walk with a friend and walk carefully but not with fear. The black and tea colored water of the Lumbee River has swamps filled with dark rotting logs from fallen trees and giant broken branches that the swamp uses like magic powder to turn muddy water into the clear dark waters of the Lumbee River. Her green canopy grows more thick in swampy places and dims the light but don't fear darkness. The frequent visitor knows to walk slowly and keep to the sandy path and if you step in mud don't panic as mud washes off easily. A few minutes more and you'll see the sun light is again streaming through the trees. The swamps of the Lumbee River are alive and are amazing magicians as they can take the most barren space of fallen trees and broken branches and turn it into a small emerald forest where birds sing and otters play and passing by you will not know what to say...so just smile and be quiet and stay a while and listen. The deepest green moss you'll ever see grows like ivy on the knees of Cypress trees and feels like soft velvet. The knees of Cypress trees grow here and there and everywhere. Wherever the Cypress tree needs to bend into with the wind or just sway her branches and breathe in the cool fresh air that rises from the river, the knees will grow there. And I must say, you'll never see something so beautiful as a tree all dressed up in layers of green and grey Spanish lace and dancing with the wind. The innermost sanctuary of the dark waters of is so filled with beauty that God made a mirror and laid it across the top of the river so even the birds flying over can look down and see the beauty of the amazing dark clear waters of the ole' Lumbee as she flows slow and soft and free. Imagine getting to see her deep soft curves from above...no wonder so many rare birds decide to build nests and rest in the trees of her canopy? If I were a bird living atop a tree with such a view of the river slowly winding her way along, I'd sing too. byjojobrooksshifflett @lumbeejojo NativeDaughterDialogues #Samburke #JesusHeals #SjogrensSyndrome #autoimmunedisease #Lumbeejojo #estrangedmom #MissMySon #indigenousauthors #TheLumberRiver #robesoncountync #PembrokeNC #Lumbee #Cypresstrees #Cypressknees #BlackRivers #holytrees #treesinbible #lumbeejojo
