CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) - It's one of the hottest trends, natural childbirth, and now for the first time it's available to women in the Tri-State. Family birthing specialists at Mercy Health Anderson Hospital are now offering women in labor the use of "nitrous oxide" for a "kinder, gentler experience." Taylor Oberschlake gave birth to her son Cooper just a few weeks ago. Taylor is one of the first moms in the area who chose to use nitrous oxide. Cooper's delivery was a unique experience according to Taylor, even though she was in labor for almost 24 hours according to her. Taylor chose to have nitrous oxide for pain management throughout her delivery. Nitrous oxide is better known as "laughing gas." "I felt some pain, but not a lot, to where it was screaming 'oh my god I can't handle this,'" said Taylor. Susan Holden is a certified nurse midwife. She says nitrous oxide has been used in labor and delivery in other countries for years. "America is finally catching on and realizing this is a good thing to offer our women as well," said Susan Holden who is a certified nurse midwife. Laughing gas is what's called an "analgesic" so "it kind helps relax and even though the pain does not go away, it makes your brain say 'I can cope with it, it's not as bad as i think it really is,'" said Holden. Part of what makes it safe for use in pregnancy is the way it's delivered to women according to Nurse Robin Benthien. "What this machine is able to do is to blend oxygen and nitrous oxide so the patient can breathe in a 50% nitrous oxide, 50% oxygen blend," said Nurse Benthien. Each woman is given her own tubing for this blend, which is hooked up to a mask. The women are then allowed to use as much of the gas as they think they need. Because it's self-administered, as soon as the woman moves the mask away, her system clears within a minute. The research indicates that it does not affect the baby because it goes through the lungs and it clears through the lungs, it doesn't really go through the placental barrier that some of the other medications do. For Taylor, who did not have this option in the labor of her other children, she says it really was a kinder, gentler approach to pain relief in childbirth. "You still feel the pain, it just takes the edge off and it make it a lot easier to get through," said Taylor. As for what she sees in Cooper now, well that is of course no laughing matter, but instead it is everything she wanted most from this experience: "Just happiness and joy," said Taylor.
