Q&A Session with audience from Oak School 性仁法師與老師和學生聊佛法 2022.04.03 Amida Society I have two. OK. When I think about Christianity, I think about several denominations, like Catholicism and Protestantism. Are there different types of denominations of Buddhism? And then, my second question is, can you talk a little bit about monks, and how they are different from a person who is a Buddhist, and do you have to be enlightened to be a monk, and what is that lifestyle? So the two questions you asked, one is: are there different sects different schools in Buddhism? The other one is: how is a monk different from a normal person? What is the lifestyle of a monk? The first question, there are so many different traditions, different denominations, different schools in Buddhism. There are three major traditions, we call them Tibetan Buddhism, the second one is Theravada Buddhism, and the third one is Mahayana Buddhism. We are belonging to Mahayana Buddhism. And the second question, there are some major differences between a monk and a lay person, ordinary people like all of you. We have strict precepts to observe. We need to be single, to be celibate, and we need to be vegetarian, fully vegetarian, and we do a lot of sermons, rites, prayers. That is the difference. There are different lives, different career also like a dedicated career. Like, you are a teacher, so you focus on teaching. You don't do things that maybe an engineer would do, right? So, you have a different career and different way of executing that career, so it's different from that aspect. So, are monks more enlightened than a lay person would be? Not necessarily, but a monk is fully focused on the teachings of the Buddha to spread the teachings of the Buddha. That's our job. You can say they are more determined, or what I mean is they are more determined, because they are dedicating their lives propagating the truth of Buddhism. There are different situations. And this is across three major schools of thought, monks all do the same thing within each denomination? Mostly they are the same, but there are some differences between different traditions, different denominations.
