Nearly two years after its creation, a Newport News, Virgina task force held its first public forum earlier this month (Nov.1). The group is examining both the city and a local university’s role in the erasure of a historic Black community. Amid calls for transparency, the group used the forum to share findings and outline next steps. Two-time Emmy Award–winning investigative journalist and filmmaker Brandi Kellam, spoke with task force leaders Vice Mayor Curtis Bethany III and Christopher Newport University Provost Quentin Kidd immediately following the forum for their first on-camera sit-down. Kellam's original reporting exposed this issue nationally and prompted the creation of the task force. The task force's examination is part of a larger statewide legislative effort currently investigating similar histories.
