In Aveiro, curiously, the first cemetery - the current central cemetery of the city - was built, although, apparently, in very precarious conditions, back in 1835. Part of the land that had belonged to the fence of the extinct Dominican convent of Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia was used for this purpose. The government decree of May 1834, issued by the then Minister of Justice, Joaquim António de Aguiar (who became known as "Mata Frades"), extinguished, with immediate effect, all male religious orders, and female orders could not admit new members until their extinction upon the death of the last nun. For this reason, at the end of June 1834, all the friars had already left the convent of Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia. Source: "Aveiro and Culture. Historical Calendar of Aveiro" The first body to be buried in the new cemetery, on December 12, 1835, was that of the carpenter Francisco de Almeida, who had lived on Rua do Espírito Santo (currently Rua de Eça de Queirós). Before the burial, the people rioted and, at the request of the deceased's family, even opened graves in two churches. However, the authority ended up imposing itself. He was the first deceased to be buried outside of a church, even more so in a cemetery with very poor conditions and which had not even been blessed. In 1839, a chapel was built in the cemetery and it was only on November 10 of that year, with the presence of the City Council and local authorities, that it was blessed. Source: "Aveiro and Culture. Historical Calendar of Aveiro" In the following decades, the City Hall provided the cemetery with better conditions. One of them was the installation of a gate at the entrance, on the top of which you can still read: "Municipality 1860".
