Janelle Martinez started playing baseball at three years old in a family where the sport has run through generations. At ten, she made the switch to softball because college opportunities were limited in baseball for women - probably the best decision she ever made. By fifteen, she was representing Puerto Rico on the national team, and by her freshman year of college, she was competing alongside pro players at the Alabama World Games. In this inspiring conversation with Angelina Martell, Janelle reveals how visiting FIU during a soccer workout made her feel at home for the first time ("I'm Hispanic - I felt like I fit there"), the culture shock of going from her small town in Ponce to Chipola Junior College in rural Florida where she didn't know the language, and why her grandfather taught her to play every position rather than closing doors. She discusses winning a silver medal at the 2022 Pan American Games, breaking out of a slump against Western Kentucky by trusting what got her there, and why she calls her mom before every game. From catcher to first base to outfield, Janelle embodies the versatility her family instilled in her since age three. She shares how being realistic with yourself about the JUCO-to-D1 path is crucial, why looking at the ocean reminds her of home, and the legacy she wants to leave: someone who tried to do her best everywhere to help the team win.
