(Neon Tetra, Cardinal Tetra, Harlequin Rasbora, Chili Rasbora, Corydoras) Do Neon Tetras School? In my experience, neon tetras rarely school or shoal consistently. They tend to shoal together when introduced to a new tank or during specific situations like water changes, lighting changes, or breeding behavior. Initially, when I added them to my old 29-gallon tank, they stuck together for a few days but gradually became more independent as they acclimated to their environment. Over time, they usually prefer to explore independently, rarely forming tight schools unless startled or during the breeding season. Do Cardinal Tetras School? Cardinal tetras exhibit similar behavior to neon tetras but tend to be more confident and independent. They do not shoal as often, even during the initial introduction to the tank. Lighting changes can cause them to group temporarily, but they typically spread out to find food. Unlike neon tetras, they are less likely to react to sudden disturbances by shoaling. My cardinal tetras are juveniles and have not bred yet, so their behavior may change during breeding. Do Harlequin Rasboras School? Harlequin rasboras are more sociable and tend to shoal more frequently than neon or cardinal tetras. They shoal when first introduced to the tank and randomly throughout the day. This behavior makes them more visible and active compared to the tetras. They are confident in their shoaling and often swim together, making them an excellent choice for those who want to see active schooling behavior. Do Chili Rasboras School? Chili rasboras are the most consistent schoolers among the fish I keep. Despite their tiny size, they frequently form tight shoals, especially when feeling calm and secure. Their deep red color can indicate their comfort level, with darker hues appearing when they are relaxed. In a less crowded tank, they seem to shoal more often. Their small size can make them harder to see, but they are very active and frequently shoal, making them fascinating to observe. Do Corydoras School? Corydoras, particularly Corydoras aneus, are more social than true schoolers. They often group together to forage for food or rest after meals, giving the appearance of shoaling. I keep five corydoras, and while they do exhibit some grouping behavior, it's more related to their foraging patterns than true schooling. They are active and interactive, often appearing to beg for food when they see me, behaving more like social pets than typical schooling fish.
