Chapter 55 – Luang Prabang Laos – Day 3 - Part1 I had to wake up before dawn at 05:00 to meet up with a Tuk-Tuk the resort had kindly arranged, to take me downtown to see the “tak bath” or ‘alms giving’ ceremony, where the monks come to collect donations. When we arrived near the closed Luang Prabang night market, a large crowd was already waiting, and chairs were set up to accommodate more people. The crowd was a mix of locals and a smattering of foreign tourists who had come to participate. At 06:00, a line of monks in their saffron coloured robes appeared, and walked barefoot and in single file along the street past the waiting crowds. People would place gifts of sticky rice balls, candy, money and other daily necessities into the monk’s alms bowls. The significance of this religious ritual is to “make merit” for those giving the alms, and for the monks to show humility and devotion to their monastic life. Just when you thought that the monks were finished walking, another line of monks from another temple would appear. I headed back to the resort, and as we approached, I heard the sound of chanting from the small temple next door. They were holding their own alms giving ceremony, a strictly local event. After I had watched this ceremony, I went back to the resort to have breakfast, before setting out on a tour of the local points of interest, which is part 2 of this chapter.
