Preventing Frozen Pipes in Extreme Cold

Learn some tips from City of Lakewood Building Commissioner Chris Parmelee on how to keep your pipes from freezing during extreme cold weather conditions. These tips include: • Know where your main shutoff valve is. • Disconnect your hoses from outside, and turn off the water running to your hose bibs from inside if possible. • Let your cold water trickle in basement faucets or sinks where pipes run along exterior walls. Water has a harder time freezing if it's in motion. • Open your kitchen and bathroom cabinets/vanities open to allow warm air in. • Insulate pipes in the basement and/or along exterior walls. Pipe insulation is available at local hardware stores. • Open heat registers in your basement to allow warm air into the basement. • In the event of a frozen line, use a hairdryer to warm and thaw the pipe. Do not use open flame, as it can loosen the solder joints, and potentially cause a fire.
