One NAU professor, and the help of over 80 students, are building a sustainable greenhouse that will allow students to use their “green thumbs” without having to worry about the harsh weather conditions of Flagstaff. The greenhouse will not only benefit students, but also the community around them. Ideally, a lot of the plants grown in the greenhouse will be contributed to other community gardens to help with this positive proliferation of community gardens. NAU Assistant Professor, Danielle Perry said one of the goals is to recruit and retain indigenous students into the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) fields by using knowledge that is more familiar to them. She also wants the general class to learn about sustainable practices. Students will soon be able to make suggestions on what kind of plants they want to plant inside the greenhouse. NAU Student, Nathen Blowers said he will utilize this project because he likes the ability to grow his own natural foods.
