This documentary reproduces the legendary story of Pearl Buck, an American female writer, through a fragmented and stream of consciousness narration style. As the daughter of American missionary Sai Zhaoxiang, she came to China by boat at the end of the 19th century and grew up in Zhenjiang. Having lived in Jiangsu and Anhui for nearly 40 years, she named herself the daughter of Zhenjiang, and the daughter of China. Nurtured by the spirits of Confucianism and Western civilization,Pearl Buck is a hybrid wandering in between the Oriental and Western worlds, both geographically and spiritually. These unique experiences render her distinctive spirit as an individual and a writer, in which she incorporated into every one of her literary masterpieces. Though a solitary pursuit, her empathy and desire for connection obligated her to actively engage in the real world .With the deep love of humanitarianism, she remained closely attached to the land where she grew up. Almost all of her works are related to her oriental homeland, which are not only limited to big cities, but also deeply concerns the small villages and lives of the unprivileged. Her famous trilogy 'The Good Earth', illustrating the farmer’s life in northern Anhui, had won her the Nobel Prize. Moreover, she is the first person who translated “Water Margin” and introduced the book to the Western world, making her an exceptionally influential figure who gave Westerners a rare insight into the subtleties of the oriental world. Pearl Buck's life had been intimately bonded with China, and she dedicated herself fully to the Oriental world. Throughout World War II, Pearl Buck kept cheering on the Chinese for the Anti-Japanese War. She advocated the Anti-Japanese War on the radio, raised funds, shot movies, and wrote the first novel reflecting the Chinese Anti-Japanese War - “Dragon Seeds”. Her constant voices in the United States made Westerners aware for the first time that there was an ancient nation fighting for freedom . Unfortunately, due to the Cultural Revolution, Pearl Buck, along with her books, her humanitarian contributions, have been buried in the dust for a long time. As the cultural bridge between East and West, such a remarkable figure should not be forgotten. By interviewing dozens of literary experts and her family members ,"Pearl on the Good Earth" recreates a chronicle of this legendary woman's life. A friend who gives everything to Chinese people in difficult time should not be forgotten.
