Well, Halicarnassus is actually still around. It's just changed its name to Bodrum. Last year while investigating some Mycenaean tombs in the area I knew I had to swing by Bodrum to see what's left. And what is a 'Mausoleum' anyway? Well - as we shall see it's named after a guy called Mausolus, the ruler of 4th century BC Halicarnassus, who the wonder was named for, and who gives his name to the monumental decorated tombs we still see in cemeteries all over the world today.
