This thing sounds insane! I smartened up and front loaded the video with a patch I scouted out first, and man... There are some great moments of inspiration here. While the entire video is me improvising as I go, the sounds are often to intuitive that I feel like I wrote a couple whole soundtracks worth of usable idea buds. String machines aren't just for weird 70s prog bands, or movie soundtracks. What they appear to be most like to me is a middle point between saw sounds and string ensembles, that has a built in inclination for very lush chorus sound. In practice, that means you can write really lush synth pads that echo back to the Juno 60\106 or the Jupiter, but if you make the patch dirty enough, you can actually end up with thick synth bass sounds as well. Of course you can also do some string ensemble sustains as well. But the trick to all of these sounds, at least as far as I can tell, it to give them some movement with the filters, either amplitude or cutoff. Just five it some sort of movement either long or short, and these sounds will just ooze character. I openly admit to not know a lot of about string machines going in to this video, but they didn't stop me at all from immediately diving in and making music. Notes: There are some clicks and pops on my microphone through this video that I have signal flow troubleshooted to being related to my soundcard and or OBS Studio. I'll experiment on fixing this for next time. Full disclosure: UVI gave me access to this library for the purposes of making this video.
