Excerpt from Chapter 9 “This is the North Pole?” he asked. “It’s cold enough, but why is it below ground? And where’s the Pole?” He had a picture in his head of a red and white striped pole that was supposed to sit right next to Santa’s house. “And where are the elves? And Santa?” “Ah, yes, lots of questions,” Malcolm chuckled. “I’ll start with the first and see if we can get answers to the rest soon enough.” He pointed to the caverns and the ceiling. “Most magical things are underground. And the North Pole is the most magical place there is. If it were on the surface, the planes that fly over the Arctic would have discovered it long ago. It would probably be a tourist attraction with people charging money to visit, and the magic would have been ruined. Oh no, no, all the really deep magic in this world is down here, out of view. It keeps it pure and untainted.” In times of great change, stories help us find our way in the world, our place in the great tapestry of life.
