Mother is More Than 3 Times the Legal Limit and Has 7-Week-Old Baby in Car

On December 24, 2024, a Santa Fe County Animal Control officer observed a silver Subaru hatchback driving erratically. He notified the Sheriff's Department dispatcher, who relayed the information to all Sheriff's personnel. Numerous deputies spotted the vehicle on Interstate 25 and initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle was being driven by a 40-year-old mother who had her 7-week-old daughter in the backseat. The woman stumbled out of the vehicle and immediately uttered that she was drunk. While Corporal Moore tended to the baby, Deputy Cullison asked the woman if she was willing to perform standardized field sobriety tests. The woman refused and was placed under arrest for Driving While Under the Influence of Liquor. She was transported to the Sheriff's Office where she submitted to an evidential breath test. The results were 0.26% and 0.25% BAC, more than 3 times the legal limit. The woman's mother, father, and husband responded to the scene to pick up the 7-week-old daughter. The woman was evidentially booked into the Santa Fe County Detention Center, where she spent Christmas. She was not released until December 26th.
