"Historic Trails: Hiking Through Arizona's History" Delve into Arizonan history in this new episode of "Trail Mix'd" with trails across the state that offer a glimpse into the past. First, join Jayarr about an hour away from Phoenix at Montezuma Castle, a monument that showcases the compelling history of the Sinagua people. This easy trail is good for the whole family and has a fascinating visitor center providing thorough information about the monument's history. Next, we go just a few miles north to Montezuma Well. The well was a vital water source for the Sinagua people to irrigate their crops, and it remains consistently full to this day. Marvel at the view of the massive well, and make sure to take note of the cave dwellings along the edge. Next, we visit the Walnut Canyon Island Trail. Located near Flagstaff, the Island Trail is the location where generations of Puebloan people lived in cliff dwellings. The canyon is named for the walnut trees that grow throughout it, shielding the dwellings from the sun. The park has gorgeously preserved this essential piece of Arizonan history, with visitors to the park being able to go right inside the dwellings. The trail is moderately difficult with lots of stairs, but the views you get of the expansive canyon and historical cave dwellings is well worth the effort!
