How do you know your dog needs BOAS surgery? A BOAS assessment is one of the tools to identify if your dog has clinically relevant disease (other tools include a CT scan etc..), it also has other uses which we talk about in this video! I learned how you conduct a BOAS assessment on flat-faced/ brachycephalic breed dogs (eg. pugs, french bulldogs, english bulldogs) from Lydia, an awesome specialist nurse and BOAS assessor. BOAS assessments are done to determine whether your dog requires surgery, medical treatment or further monitoring, as well as research with aims to improve breed health long-term. What is BOAS? Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) refers to a group of conditions in brachycephalic (short skull shape and hence flat faced) dogs. Due to extreme breeding conformation, they have anatomical defects (increased amounts of soft tissue in their short skull) and a myriad of health issues that most people are not aware about 😞. With this video, we hope to bring awareness and sign-post some resources on BOAS and educate others on what goes on in a BOAS assessment. 💡💡For more information on BOAS: Cambridge BOAS Research Group 🔵Website: https://www.vet.cam.ac.uk/boas/ 🔵Insta: / cambridgeboasresearchgroup 🔵FB: / cambridgeboasresearchgroup 🔵The BOAS nurse (@the_boas_nurse): / the_boas_nurse 🔴🔴 BVA, Jane Ladlow: How do we treat brachy dogs ethically?: https://www.bva.co.uk/news-and-blog/b... 🟢British Veterinary Association (BVA) policy statement on brachycephalic dogs: https://www.bva.co.uk/take-action/our... ⏰Timestamps 0:00 1:02 introduce yourself 1:47 what is BOAS brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome 2:30 part 1: health exam 3:09 stertor respiratory noise 3:27 part 2: exercise test 4:10 break time 4:21 part 3: WBBP whole body barometric plethysmography chamber 5:00 brief trace explaination 5:48 benefits of carrying out BOAS assessment? 6:19 data collection for research 7:10: health issues faced by flat faced dogs and what we can do about it to engage both the general public and veterinary community? 7:51 where to look for more information Other videos you might enjoy 📚Vet school application tips: • Applying to vet school in the UK?
